Jonathan P. Lakey - Walk Cook Lakey PLC

Jon Lakey is a seasoned litigator, having practiced in Memphis, Tennessee since 1994. He has been active in both federal and state courts in Memphis, as well as other jurisdictions throughout Tennessee. Mr. Lakey believes that the formula for successfully representing his clients is simple but critical: first, he listens to his clients and provides them room to describe their problems; then, he helps his client focus on their goals and how they define success; and, finally, he devises a legal strategy, which must be mindful of business realities, designed to accomplish those goals. The right solution always depends on the particular client.

Mr. Lakey’s practice focuses on commercial litigation of all types. He has had the good fortune to work for large, mid-size and small law firms, and he believes each of these settings has been critical in his development as an attorney. Initially, out of law school, Mr. Lakey went to work as an associate for the law firm of Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs, a regional firm. After several years, he moved to Burch, Porter & Johnson, a mid-size Memphis firm, where he worked on complex commercial litigation and was awarded a partnership. Finally, Mr. Lakey moved to a smaller firm, Pietrangelo Cook, where his client-based focus matured, and he was charged with the responsibility of leading the firm’s commercial litigation practice.

Mr. Lakey has represented major corporate clients in federal and state lawsuits, and as plaintiffs and defendants. In addition to his corporate clients, Mr. Lakey has represented scores of individuals involved in business disputes. Finally, Mr. Lakey has a wealth of experience representing governmental entities, including the State of Tennessee and the City of Memphis. Several of the governmental cases have involved class litigation and complex constitutional issues, while others centered on contractual and statutory disputes.

Mr. Lakey attained his Juris Doctor degree from University of Memphis School of Law in 1994. While in law school, he was a member of the University of Memphis Law Review. In addition to competing on a nationally recognized mock trial team, he also was Chief Justice of his law school’s moot court program.

Mr. Lakey obtained his undergraduate degree from Emory & Henry College in 1989. He graduated cum laude and also was a varsity letterman in both football and tennis. Mr. Lakey was inducted to Emory & Henry’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015 for his performance on the gridiron.

Mr. Lakey is also active in his community. He currently is an Adjunct Professor at the University of Memphis Law School, teaching Advanced Legal Writing-Litigation for second and third year students. His past service includes membership on the Board of Directors for Hands On Memphis, and the advisory board of Facing History and Ourselves. He also served on the Athletic Committee for Grace St. Luke’s Episcopal Church and coached too many teams to count at Grace St. Luke’s School.

Mr. Lakey and his wife, Gayle, have been married since 1996. They have two children, Jack and Sam, who currently attend Christian Brothers High School.
